Selling a Silver Plated Tea Set in Ontario

How do I know if my tea set is silver plate or sterling?

Turn each piece over and read the mark. EPNS, EP, "silver plate", "quadruple plate" or a maker's name with no 925 or STERLING means plate. STERLING or 925 means solid silver, which is worth much more. Not sure? Send us a photo of the mark and a team member will tell you what it is.

What is a silver plated tea set worth?

Plate is paid on weight. A teapot, sugar and creamer often weigh about 5 lb, and a full service with a coffee pot and tray about 10 lb. Tea sets are holloware, paid at $7.50/lb, so 5 lb is $37.50 and 10 lb is $75.00. Holloware is hollow, so a big piece can weigh less than it looks. Anything a magnet sticks to has no value and is recycled free.

Why won't gold buyers or antique shops take it?

Gold buyers buy solid silver only, and many antique shops only want complete, matched sets in fine condition. We buy plate for its metal, in any condition, dented, tarnished or with pieces missing.
